tire
indianapolis, usa. may 2002.

the 5-lane, one-way streets traversing the city center carry a ceaseless stream of individuals sealed inside the shells of their cars, trucks and vans. commuters transporting themselves to and from work. shoppers in search of good deals and rare commodities. waste of space. waste of energy. washington, delaware, pennsylvania avenue. they draw the lines between rich and poor neighborhoods, between hip and dilapidating districts. intensely focused on the road ahead, you pass through it all in the driver's seat without noticing the changes to the left and right.

on the way from here to there,
you drive in one direction: forward.
and on the way back, from there to here,
you drive in the same direction: forward.
locked for eternity in the driver's seat, you have the sense of eternally moving forward. although you never really go anywhere.
